Chiang Mai--Baan Chang Elephant Park, meeting Meadow

(Aria's comments in italics)

Uh, you're not an elephant...

In elephant riding training school where we are learning Burmese commands to steer the elephant.

Feeding a baby elephant bananas! It knew how to take the banana, and peel it, THEN EAT IT!!! IT WAS SO COOL!

The adult elephants ate sugar cane. Their jaws are amazingly strong!!!

We are bonding with the elephants by feeding them and giving the trainers a chance to see which animals get along with us so that they can assign us the elephant with the best fit.

They taught us how to speak a small amount of Burmese to the Elephants!!!!

My Elephant's name was Meadow, and I'll never forget her. Every couple of feet, or when we stopped, she would eat, and just EAT. She wouldn't stop eating!!! It was pretty funny!

Meadow was certainly mischievous--she would harass her trainer playfully for water as he drank. He would chuckle and relent and give the rest of the cool drinking water to her.

Dad and I rode Meadow together.

Dismounting--it's a long way down.

She was also very thirsty

Playing during our mid-walk break

love.

bath time!

So, basically, I was sitting down on Meadow's Back, scrubbing it. When Meadow's Trainer, decided he wanted to play. He started to splash a little water at my foot, it escalated. Quickly. Next thing you know there is an all out war! I take a bucket, fill it with water and chase after him!

My mom denies me the right to pour the bucket on him. As I storm off back to Meadow I mutter, "Well, he started it...."

Sadly, that magical day ended... and the elephants ambled off. We think of Meadow often and hope to visit her someday soon.
