The Dunhams Visit--Batik Painting

We had been wanting to try DIY Batik Painting for some time, so we took the opportunity to schedule a session while our friends from College, the Dunhams, were here.

The Craft Batik Factory needed about 1 day notice to prepare the art area by mounting pre-waxed designs on frames for us to colorize. We could choose from butterflies, flowers and undersea designs.

Our visit began with a brief tour explaining the different ways wax can be laid on fabric. The picture above depicts the stamped wax method for a repeating pattern.

The picture below shows the wax pen hand drawn method.

We also viewed finished Batik work before going to the art station to colorize our templates.

It was like watching colors bloom! It is a very therapeutic, cathartic process of dribbling droplets of dye and watching it bleed across the white cloth, neatly demarcated by the wax. Then you can either mix another color or push the fading color by washing it across the cloth with water.

We really had fun despite the heat and mosquitoes!

Check out the iridescent finished product.

The view from below looking towards light really brought out the color. After we left, the factory fixed the colors and washed it to brighten, then hemmed the edges.

The final product was even more impressive than we hoped!
