Taking Care of Housework

The next day, I went off to work understudying Lydia (our host parent and work mentor). While I was gone, Monica washed another load of laundry and tried out our new drying rack.

We found that moving the rack into our air-conditioned bedroom at night expedited the drying process--useful when it rained. the result--textile jerky! The clothes and towels end up stretched and almost crispy!

While I worked, Monica continued her Masters homework by logging onto the school wifi network. Our home internet service had not been set up so Monica had to time her activity with mine. The children played on the school library computers and yearned to meet other children to play.

When the library was closed, they would hide out in my office!

Ian was thrilled to re-discover the super hand dryers at the Gurney Mall, but was not too thrilled about the "squat pan" toilets. Fortunately, many bathrooms in Penang had regular commodes, AND toilet paper as well in addition to the ubiquitous hose to wash your bottom!

My advice to both kiddos about using the squatty potties was: "Don't slip and fall in!"
