My first experience driving in Penang was in a Cargo Van that had no power steering, manual transmission, and was underpowered. It belonged to the school, and I rented it to pick up book shelves from Lydia who had sold the furniture to us in preparation to move to Singapore. To get to her apartment, I followed her along the sinuous path that is the coastal road to Batu Ferringhi. After that trial, driving the school car and van (which had power steering) was a cinch! However, the traffic in Penang continued to confound us!
Everything was confusing to us that first week, then I began to recognize where I was and began to drive around more confidently.
While not all the goods at TESCO interested us (the plastic items were very brittle and chintzy), it had an air-conditioned food court that had food that cost less than half that of Gurney Plaza.
While Island Plaza is on the decline, it had a Cold Storage that often had food items on deep discount because of the low volume of sales recently.
