Breakfast at the Wet Market Hawker Center

We have thoroughly enjoyed eating at our neighborhood wet market Hawker Center. There is a jewel of a chef there from Hong Kong who cranks out the most lovely Prawn Chee Cheong Fun!
This freshly rolled and regularly made treat simply melts in your mouth, and is stuffed with massive prawns that still have snap!

Our family devours plates of this stuff and just seem to want more of it! Here is a closeup of the most recent family obsession... can you smell the sesame soy and crispy fried shallots?!! The chili sauce is earthy and slightly punchy to bring out the lovely flavors!

The other recent discovery was commissioned by none other than my cousin who adores Purple Yam Cake... a nostalgic memory food! I found a stall that sold out of her product by 8am (little surprise why), and I scored this plate at 8:30am. Her platter was almost out, and as I paid for my portion, another patron bought out the last remnants!

Once again, this deceptively simple treat is studded with bits of dried shrimp and mushroom, then sauced with a mild and slightly sweet chili sauce. Then heaps of fried and fresh scallion is dumped on top!

The next discovery was a memory food from my past! Teochew style dumplings with home-made skin that is translucent and very pliable. Slicked with light oil for a lovely sheen, these dumplings are filled with fragrant loads of bamboo shoot and jicama, garlic chive (my mother's favorite) and yam. Take a nice long look down memory lane!
Here's another view with the dumplings split open to reveal their little treasures!
